Nigeria Has 120M Cell Phone Subscribers; MTN Takes Lion’s Share

Nigeria, Africa’s largest mobile phone market, has 120 million mobile subscribers, the Nigerian Communications Commission said, according to a report in CP-Africa.

South African mobile operator MTN leads the mobile operators in the country with more than 55 million Nigerian subscribers.

The country’s top five mobile operators dominate Nigeria’s mobile landscape of 120.36 million, with 117.41-million subscribers.

Nigerian-owned mobile operator Glo comes a distant second with 25 million-plus subscribers while Airtel has more than 21 mobile subscribers.

Most Nigerian subscribers are on systems that use GSM (global system for mobile communications) technology.

CDMA/PTO operators have been hardest hit by increasing competition, the report said.
