Days after Oprah Winfrey spoke at the Golden Globe Awards against sexual misconduct in Hollywood, her widely praised speech has triggered criticism for what renowned musician Seal described as being “part of the problem for decades.”
Oprah’s speech was considered by many to be so good that it triggered numerous news reports about her potential as a future U.S. president.
Just 9 years old when she was first sexually abused, Oprah kept silent about it for years. Her career in journalism gave her the voice to talk about it, and raising awareness of sexual abuse has been a hallmark of her work.
In an Instagram post Wednesday, Seal republished a pair of photos of Oprah with disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, including one in which she appears to be kissing him. The text overlay on the photos reads: “When you have been part of the problem for decades, but suddenly they all think you are the solution.”
Seal commented beneath the photos: “Oh I forgot, that’s right…..you’d heard the rumours but you had no idea he was actually serially assaulting young stary-eyed actresses who in turn had no idea what they were getting into. My bad. #SanctimoniousHollywood”
Images of Oprah socializing with Weinstein have been circulating in right-wing circles since the presidential chatter began after her speech, BuzzFeed reported.

Instagrammers responded strongly to Seal. Here are some responses:
“Seal has a personal vendetta with Oprah.”
“Your wife was Heidi Klum so there’s no way you didn’t know either.”
“You had no issue appearing on her show just a few years ago.”
And Chrissy Teigen said this: “Hmmm Let’s just say we’ve all heard things about each other, haven’t we?”
Comedian and “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane also spoke out against Oprah, cautioning that celebrity power alone does not qualify a candidate for the presidency, Page Six reported:
“Oprah is beyond doubt a magnificent orator,” MacFarlane wrote. “But the idea of a reality show star running against a talk show host is troublingly dystopian. We don’t want to create a world where dedicated public service careers become undesirable and impractical in the face of raw celebrity.”
British actress Kadian Noble claimed that Weinstein used Winfrey and supermodel Naomi Campbell as bait — “swinging off his arm” — to help him lure Noble to his hotel room in France where he allegedly assaulted her, EW reported.
More than 70 women have come forward claiming sexual harassment and assault against Weinstein going back decades.
TMZ in October cited unnamed sources who said Oprah was willing to interview Weinstein, “and said he needed to speak out and defend himself, and when he did she would be right there supporting him,” according to TMZ. Oprah’s representative told TMZ that Oprah was interested in doing a “60 Minutes” interview with Weinstein, but made it clear, “She was only interested if he’d look in the mirror and give her the honest, bone marrow truth.”
Publicly, Winfrey has denounced Weinstein’s “hideous behavior.”
On Twitter, Seal was called out for “selective outrage,” since his ex-wife, Heidi Klum, has also appeared in photos with Weinstein.
