The sixth edition of the MTN Business App of the Year Awards took place recently in Johannesburg, with mobile applications across various categories recognized for their positive impact on business.

Mobile app solutions developed and presented by people from a diverse range of socio-economic backgrounds ensures that these solutions are designed with real-life challenges in mind, and this is what the South Africa telecoms giant, MTN, aimed to appreciate through the awards.

The judging panel was made up of business leaders and experts in their respective fields, with categories including best enterprise solution, most innovative solution and best breakthrough developer, among many others.

Here are the 11 winners from the MTN Business App Of The Year Awards.

Best Agriculture Solution: The TreeApp South Africa

Trees are not always easy to identify, and there are not as many resources out there to easily determine tree and plant types. TheTreeApp aims to change that, with straight forward visible attributes that anyone can use as search criteria to found out information about various trees.

The WatIf Health Portal is designed to deliver healthcare to the average citizen, and is essentially a disease management solution that requires input of basic clinical data from patients, before processing the information through an interactive medical knowledge system that is a part of WatIf artificial intelligence, providing valuable feedback and info for the user.

Best Gaming Solution: Pick ‘n Pay’s Super Animals 2

This mobile app allows users to meet the all new South African Super Animals, created by South African supermarket chain, Pick n Pay. After collecting physical cards in store, gamers can keep track of their South African Super Animals cards via the app, unlock new badges and earn new rewards as their card collections grow. Users can also watch the animals come to life with movement and sound.

Best Education Solution: Awethu Project

The Awethu Project app is a mobile business tool aimed at educating one million people in developing economies on how to start and grow a business. The app and startup aim to stimulate job creation through education and entrepreneurship.

Best South African App: Hey Jude

Hey Jude is a real human assistant that lives on the app user’s smartphone. Hey Jude is designed to help users with any type of activity that a typical online assistant would deal with, such as booking a restaurant reservation, organising tradesmen or finding information on a particular product. The app and its service is available in South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K.

Best Breakthrough Developer: Zulzi

Winner of both the best breakthrough developer and people’s choice awards, Zulzi is an on-demand delivery platform for anything that is within the consumer’s general area. It basically serves as an online digital mall which connects the consumer with a personal shopper who will deliver to the customer within an hour. The personal shopper is able to deliver food, groceries, pharmaceuticals or anything else that can be ordered.

Most Innovative Solution: InterGreatMe

InterGreatMe is an identity management platform, providing users with control of their identities across financial services, telecommunications, insurance and credit providing companies. The platform also allows businesses to comply with various South African legislation related to identification.

Best Incubated Solution: EcoSlips

EcoSlips converts ordinary paper slips into digital advertisements that appear on consumer mobile phones. Retailers are able to link their point-of-sale systems to EcoSlips and send transaction slips digitally from any pay point to a consumer’s mobile phone. This method reduces paper waste and provides a new advertising platform to grow a business within the retail sector.

Best Consumer Solution: OrderIn

OrderIn is a food delivery app which gives users the ability to order food via their mobile phones and have it delivered in minutes. If users prefer not to have it delivered to their home or office, they can also order ahead and collect or pay in person. This convenience earned the app the best consumer solution MTN Business App of the Year Award.

Best Enterprise Solution: TransUnion 1Check

TransUnion’s printed Autodealer Guide has traditionally been a trusted source of vehicle and driver information for vehicle dealers, equipping them with invaluable data for making vehicle trading and risk decisions. TransUnion have now created a low cost, real-time, easy-to-use mobile management tool which reduces high printing costs and closes the gap between fluctuating market values and monthly publishing lead time of their book.

Best Financial Solution: Shyft for Standard Bank

Shyft was also named the overall winner at the MTN Business App of the Year Awards. Developed in collaboration with South Africa’s Standard Bank, Shyft allows customers to take care of all their forex needs from their mobile phone, with no need to visit a bank branch. Purchasing forex and other related services can all be done via a mobile phone.
