12 African International Friendly Results From The Last Week

National teams throughout Africa were involved in international friendly matches over the last five days, as they used the FIFA international break as an opportunity to prepare for various qualifying campaigns with encounters against other nations.

With the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2018 World Cup qualifying campaigns taking place during the course of this year, the African teams are making the most of friendlies as part of their preparations.

We take a look at 12 international friendly results involving African teams from the last few days.

South Africa 3-1 Guinea Bissau

Two penalties went the way of Bafana Bafana as the South Africans overcame Guinea Bissau in an international friendly played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Kermit Erasmus opened the scoring for the home side from the spot, before Percy Tau scored a stunner from long range. Aldair Baldé scored late on for Guinea Bissau as a consolation, before Andile Jali converted a second penalty to make it 3-1.

Tanzania 2-0 Botswana

The Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam was the stage for Tanzania’s 2-0 victory over Botswana in an international friendly on Saturday, with the East Africans managing the win thanks to a brace from star player Mbwana Samatta.

Kenya 2-1 DR Congo

Kenya managed to secure a positive 2-1 home victory over a strong DR Congo team at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, thanks to a brace from Michael Olunga. The striker scored in the 6th and 71st minutes, ensuring that Gaël Kakuta’s strike on the hour mark would be nothing more than a consolation.

Zimbabwe 0-0 Zambia

The matchup between two of southern Africa’s top footballing nations ended in a goalless draw at the National Sports Stadium in Harare, as neither Zambia nor Zimbabwe managed to find the decisive goal in the international friendly clash.

Nigeria 1-1 Senegal

Kelechi Iheanacho’s late penalty cancelled out Moussa Sow’s opening goal as the Super Eagles of Nigeria earned a 1-1 draw with the Teranga Lions of Senegal in an international friendly at The Hive Stadium in England on Thursday.

Tunisia 0-1 Cameroon

Fresh from their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title victory in Gabon, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon continued their dominance on the continent by securing an away victory over Tunisia at the Stade Mustapha Ben Jannet in Monastir. A 1-0 win came courtesy of a goal from AFCON hero Vincent Aboubakar.

Russia 0-2 Cote D’Ivoire

The Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire overpowered their Russian opponents on Friday at the Stadion FK Krasnodar with goals from Jonathan Kodjia and Wilfried Zaha ensuring a 2-0 win for the away side in the only match of the day involving an African team against a non-African opponent.

Guinea 2-2 Gabon

Recent AFCON hosts Gabon drew 2-2 with Guinea in France on Friday night at the Stade Oceane in Le Havre, with Gabon needing to snatch a draw in the final minute of the match after Guinea looked certain to secure the victory.

Morocco 2-0 Burkina Faso

Goals from Fayçal Fajr and Aziz Bouhaddouz settled matters in favour of the Atlas Lions in this highly anticipated affair, with a goal from Bouhaddouz on the hour mark adding to a first half strike from Fajr for a victory over the Stallions in Marrakesh.

Libya 0-0 Togo

The friendly international match between Libya and Togo ended in a goalless stalemate, with neither side able to secure victory at the expense of the other. Though neither side was technically at home, as the match was played at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Egypt.

Mauritania 1-0 Benin

In a stunning win for the minnows, Mauritania managed a narrow 1-0 victory over their more illustrious opponents Benin, with the goal coming in the 88th minute at the Stade Olympique de Nouakchott courtesy of a penalty from Ahmed Moulaye.

Kenya 1-1 Uganda

Another game that took place on Thursday saw Kenya and Uganda face off in a traditional East African rivalry that always produces entertaining encounters. The Kenyans took the lead through a goal from Michael Olunga in the first half, but Moses Waiswa managed to snatch a draw in the dying minutes of the game, leaving it 1-1.
