VIDEO: Retracing The Footsteps Of Slaves At Ghana’s Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle

Built by the Portuguese as a trading post in 1482, Elmina Castle became one of the most important stops on the Atlantic slave trade route. When the Dutch took it over, they continued the slave trade until 1814. In 1872, Elmina became a British possession. After Ghana gained independence in 1957, Elmina Castle became a historic tourist site recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It’s the oldest European building below the Sahara Desert.
