Champions League Semi-Final Remains An Open Affair

Champions League Semi-Final Remains An Open Affair

The UEFA Champions League semi-final ties are still undecided after the first leg matches this week, with a spot in the final up for grabs in the return leg.

The results in the two matches leave the encounters open, with any of the four teams still having the opportunity to reach the title match, which will be played in Milan, Italy at the end of May.

Real Madrid travelled to Manchester City on Tuesday, and despite some decent chances for both clubs, the final result was a goalless stalemate.

Cristiano Ronaldo failed a late fitness test due to an injury, and he was not able to take part in the match, and without him in attack the Galacticos did not manage a goal.

Man City keeper Joe Hart was in excellent form, saving a number of excellent chances to keep the English club level with the Spanish visitors.

The result leaves the second leg wide open, but with the Madrid players enjoying home advantage, they will be favourites to reach the final, and they may also have Ronaldo back by next Wednesday.

Atleti ahead in Champions League semi-final

In the other semi-final Atletico Madrid welcomed a visit from Bayern Munich, and the Germans found it difficult to settle in Spain.

A fantastic goal from Saul Niguez on 11 minutes gave Atleti a 1-0 win at the Calderon. The 21-year-old midfielder dribbled the ball past three Bayern players before curling the ball into goal with a fine finish that beat Manuel Neuer.

Next week Tuesday’s encounter in Germany will be interesting to watch, as the home side look to overcome a single goal deficit to advance to the final.

This is certainly doable for the Germans, who have a reputation for being able to overturn first leg losses, with a dogged determination and never-say-die attitude.

With both ties remaining unpredictable at this stage, either of the four sides could progress to set up an interesting final in Milan, but there is still a chance that a Madrid Derby could be on the cards, with Atletico and Real both in with a chance of finding each other in the title match if they manage to overcome their semi-final opponents.
