The use of technology in Africa is on the rise. In many parts of the continent apps have become a key component of the real estate sector due to the increased use and penetration of mobile phones and internet.

These apps have made it possible to search, buy or rent real estate property across the continent, through the internet. It has helped reduce fraud cases that had over the years tarnished the process of purchasing real estate in many African countries.

Lamudi

It was launched in June 2014 by Rocket Internet of Germany. Lamudi is an app that gives people and online platform to buy, rent or sell houses, land, apartments and commercial buildings. It gives users the opportunity to refine their searches to details such as type of rooms, location, price range and property type among others. Over 800,000 property are listed on this app. It is available in 20 African countries. Lamudi is also used in Asia and Latin America. It is currently the leading real estate applications in Africa.

meQasa

It was founded in 2013 by Kofi Amuasi, Rashad Seini and Kelvin Nyame, all entrepreneurs in Ghana. It links brokers, real estate property owners, buyers and tenants. It helps them communicate and meet. meQasa also provides expert advice on the real estate industry in the country.  In 2015, Frontier Digital Ventures, a Malaysian company that deals in online classifieds gave the real estate start-up US$ 500,000 to help it expand its sales, marketing and technical output. The app’s founders plan to expand it into other African countries.

KejaHunt

It is an online property listing platform in Kenya. It was founded In March 2014 by Kelvin Githuka Kihiu, Piero Muguna Mbaabu and Joshua Mutua Nzuki. They were fresh university graduates and had experienced the inconvenience of a physical search for a house. KejaHunt assists people looking for houses and house-mates to do the search online and avoid fraudsters who have flooded the real estate sector in the East African country. The app helps landlords and property owners to upload their properties on the website. KejaHunt is available on all devices that can access internet. It has an emphasis on low-income earners and lists property going for as low as US$50.

HutBay

HutBay is a property and real estate online marketplace in Nigeria. It was launched on May 24, 2013.   It helps people find property for rent or purchase, helps buyers to get mortgage services and also provides information on the real estate sector in Africa’s most populous nation.

It was founded by Justin R. Melville, Rudolf Vavruch and Ruark Ferreira in 2013.  It helps real estate owners and tenants in South Africa to link up through Ekaya.com.

BuyRentkenya

It was started by Jamie Pujaraand and Nicolas Adamjee in 2012. It is one of the leading real estate apps in Kenya, dealing in property for sale and rent. In May 2014, BuyRentKenya got an undisclosed amount of financial investment from One Africa Media, a leading classifieds company in Africa. This was meant to help the start-up to extend its market penetration with improved quality of product delivery. It also offers international listing and visitors from over 50 countries across the globe can buy and rent property in Kenya through domestic portals in their countries.

It offers agents in real estate a sales and database management system and helps them manage buyers and sellers data. It also provides sellers with quotations and other financial advice to help make the best transactions MarkitShare helps buyers to get good views of the property by use of Google Maps and Street View mobile applications. In 2013, it won the Best Android app Enterprise in the MTN app Awards.

It was founded by Ayeni Oluwaseyi, Eludire Oladapo, Ogundipe Fikayo and Balogun Sulaiman. It provides a rentals platform for people in Lagos, Nigeria. The start-up has representatives who physically meet interested tenants and buyers to conduct inspections at the different property locations.
