Adoption of children from disadvantaged family backgrounds across Africa has been on the rise in recent years. Since 2004, more than 41,000 children have reportedly been adopted by foreigners.

Some of the push factors for adoption of African children by both local and foreign applicants include poverty, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, violence and dysfunctional families.

These are 10 African countries with easy adoption rules.

Ethiopia

It has a population of about 90 million people, with at least 4.3 million orphans. The paperwork for adoption takes about four to six months. There are no residency requirements for anyone willing to adopt a child. Married couples do not have a minimum age to be eligible to adopt. No minimum income level although anyone wishing to adopt must be working. The government has also approved same-sex couples to adopt children. The most famous adoption was done by celebrity couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who adopted Zahara in 2004.

Burundi

This tiny Central African nation has had its fair share of conflict and civil war. Burundi is one of the poorest countries in Africa, with 80 percent of its people living below the poverty line. By the end of 2012, there were between 89,000 to 120,000 orphaned children. Child adoption is open to both locals and internationals. For married couples, one must be at least 36 years old. Single women aged at least 36 years are eligible to adopt children too. There is no minimum income level set for applicants wishing to adopt children. Children above one and half years are eligible for adoption. One can adopt two or more related children at the same time.

Malawi

It takes about two to six months to complete the adoption process in this Southern African country. Child adoption is open to both foreigners and locals. Malawi has no income requirements for people wishing to adopt children. Both married and single people can adopt a Malawian child. Anyone wishing to adopt must be 25 years old. Single male applicants are barred from adopting female children. Celebrated musician, Madonna, adopted a Malawian boy in 2006 and three years later, she adopted a girl.

Uganda

It is an East African country. It has a population of about 35 million people, with more than 2 million orphans. The nation has limited child protection laws. Both locals and foreigners can apply for child adoption.  Documents on child adoption are easily falsified in this country. Both couples and single females can adopt a child. The applicants must be at least 25 years of age and financially stable. There is no minimum income level required. It takes at least a year to complete the adoption process. Children aged at least six months are eligible for adoption.

South Africa

It is Africa’s second biggest economy, after Nigeria. A person must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible to adopt a child. There are financial restrictions for a child adoption applicant. Married couples, single persons, widows, widowers and divorcees can adopt a child. A child aged at least ten years can consent to be adopted.  Only children below 18 years can be adopted. An applicant does not need consent to adopt a child who has been neglected or abused or was born out of rape to his or her mother.

Burkina Faso

The nation is found in West Africa. It has a population of about 16 million people. It is one of the continent’s least developed nations. It has at least 2,100,000 orphaned and vulnerable children, the second highest in West Africa. It is a signatory to the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Corporation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. Both locals and United States nationals can adopt children. It takes between one year to one and half years to complete the adoption process. Applicants for child adoption must be at least 15 years older than the child he or she wishes to adopt. Only married couples can adopt children, with priority given to those who are unable to sire their own. A child who is at least 15 years of age can consent to be adopted.

Mali

It is a West African country. It is the eighth largest country in Africa. It has a population of about 15 million people. Child adoption is open to both locals and foreigners. There are no residency requirements for the applicants. There is no specified level of income for those willing to adopt children. For married couples, one must be at least 30 years of age. A single woman must be aged at aged 30 years and above and should also show proof of financial capability. Children under the age of 18 years can be adopted.

Morocco

It is found in North Africa and has a population of about 39 million people. The country allows both married couples and single women to adopt. They must be aged at least 25 years. There is no education limit for applicants.There is no family size that is set for those willing adopt but couples with one or two are given priority. An applicant can adopt more than one child at once. They must be employed and also demonstrate their commitment to respecting the Muslim culture, if they are not Muslims. The nation has the lowest minimum age for children eligible for adoption; they must be at least one week old.

Ghana

It an English-speaking country found in West Africa. It has a population of about 25 million people.  Child adoption applicants must be aged at least 25 years and should have stayed in the country for at least three months before applying for child adoption. This requirement can be waived through a court of law.  Both married couples and single women can adopt children. They must also demonstrate proof of financial capability.

Nigeria

It is the largest economy in Africa with a population of about 173 million people. The nation only allows Nigerians couples and single individuals to adopt. Americans with dual-citizenship can apply for child adoption too. Applicants must be at least 25 years old and at least years older than the child. Single individuals can adopt children of the same sex. There is no limit to family size for couples who wish to adopt children. There is also no education limit. Applicants with criminal records can be eligible if proper explanations are given before a court of law. Homosexual couples can adopt too. Children of up to 16 years of age are eligible for adoption. The adoption process can take at least one year and four months.
