PSG Eliminate Chelsea While Benfica Progress In UCL

The UEFA Champions League last-16 matches continued on Wednesday night, with Chelsea hosting PSG while Benfica travelled to face Zenit St Petersburg.

In the earlier match of the day, Portuguese club Benfica managed to pull off an excellent away win in Russia against Zenit, emerging from the cold with a 2-1 victory that earned them a place in the quarter-finals.

The first leg in Portugal ended 1-0 in favour of the home side, so this encounter was the decider, and a 3-1 aggregate win for Benfica was possible thanks to goals from Nicolas Gaitan and Anderson Talisca.

It was not smooth sailing for the visitors, however, as Hulk scored for Zenit in the 69th minute to level the tie, and Benfica would need to wait until the 85th minute for their first goal through Gaitan, before Talisca made certain of the Champions League last-16 result six minutes into injury time.

Chelsea Defeated At Home

The Blues of London will be disappointed to have lost 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, sealing a 4-2 aggregate victory for the French side, and eliminating Chelsea from the competition.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the star of the show, setting up a goal before scoring one of his own. In the 16th minute the Swedish striker slotted a pass to Adrien Rabiot, who would score from close range to put the French side ahead early on.

Chelsea continued to fight their way back into the match in front of their home fans, and they would make a breakthrough in the 27th minute when Diego Costa finished well to equalise.

Ibrahimovic was in fine form, however, and would eventually make it his fourth consecutive UEFA Champions League match with a goal coming from the striker.

His easy finish from Angel di Maria great pass on 67 minutes ensured passage for PSG into the quarter-finals of the competition, where a draw will be made to identify the next opponents that Benfica and PSG will face in the last eight.
