Real Madrid And Wolfsburg In Champions League Quarter-Final

Real Madrid And Wolfsburg In Champions League Quarter-Final

UEFA Champions League action on Tuesday night saw Real Madrid and Wolfsburg earn progression to the quarter-finals of the competition by securing victories over their last-16 opponents.

Real Madrid made sure of their place amongst the final eight teams in the tournament by beating Roma 2-0 on the night in the Spanish capital, emerging victorious with a 4-0 aggregate win against the Italians.

The first half could have gone the way of the visitors, as Roma created numerous chances, but a combination of excellent goalkeeping from Jesus Navas and poor finishing from the attacking pair of Egyptian Mohamed Salah and Edin Dzeko meant that the first half ended goalless.

Second half goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez put the tie beyond the Serie A side, but they will lament wasteful finishing by their strikers, who could have brought them back into the encounter had they found the target.

Ronaldo added to his recent excellent form with a 64th-minute goal to open the scoring. A well placed Lucas Vazquez cross allowed the Portuguese star to beat goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to the ball for a clever finish.

Only four minutes later Ronaldo turned provider with a wide ball for James, who finished past Szczesny with ease, displaying the kind of finishing that Roma needed from their frontmen in the first half.

The win sees Real Madrid continue their march towards the Champions League final, with their next stop being a quarter-final against a yet to be drawn opponent.

Wolfsburg follow Real into Champions League QF

Germans Wolfsburg also secured their Champions League quarter-final ticket on Tuesday night, building on their 3-2 first leg victory over Belgians Gent by adding a 1-0 return leg win to make the overall aggregate 4-2 in favour of the Bundesliga side.

Gent travelled to Germany with hopes of progressing to the last eight, but those dreams were dashed in the second half of their match as Andre Schurrle scored to give his team the win.

Excellent timing from Schurrle to move for the Julian Draxler cross allowed him to beat his defender and slot in with a good finish.

The Germans have therefore qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
