Nigeria Coach Oliseh’s Position Under Threat

Written by Peter Pedroncelli

Nigeria national team coach Sunday Oliseh may begin to feel the pressure building as his position at the helm of the Super Eagles is under threat from a number of tacticians who are interested in his job.

This comes in the wake of a disappointing showing by the Eagles at the ongoing 2016 African Nations Championships (CHAN) in Rwanda, where they were eliminated from the competition in the group stages.

The Nigerians required a draw from their final group game against Guinea to earn a place in the quarter-finals, but they could only manage a 1-0 defeat, and were knocked out as a result.

The Super Eagles won their first match of the campaign 4-1 against Niger before a 1-1 draw with Tunisia, leaving them needing to hold the Guinea national team to a stalemate, but it was not to be.

Oliseh was disappointed with the exit, but had kind words for his players while blaming struggles on the pitch with a lack of financial backing from authorities in Nigeria.

According to reports from AfricanFootball, Oliseh’s coaching post is under threat from two veterans of national team coaching in Africa.

“Foreign coaches have indicated strong interest to handle Nigeria and even some of them have appointed Nigerian representatives to get them the job,” a source from AfricanFootball revealed.

Reports suggest that Herve Renard and Claude Le Roy could be the two coaches who have shown interest in the position currently filled by the former Super Eagles star.

Renard was in charge when Cote d’Ivoire won last year’s AFCON, and was recently fired from French Ligue 1 club Lille, while Le Roy recently ended his time as Congo coach, having also spent time at the helm of DR Congo, Cameroon and Senegal.

The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) matches against Egypt in March will no doubt be a decisive moment for Oliseh and the future of the national team.
