2016 CHAN Quarter-Final Round-Up: West Africa Dominates

2016 CHAN Quarter-Final Round-Up: West Africa Dominates

The African Nations Championship ( 2016 CHAN) is ongoing in Rwanda, and over the weekend the competition’s quarter-final matches took place, with the West African countries doing well to move on to the semi-finals.

Below is a round-up of the results:

Zambia 0-0 Guinea (4-5 penalty shootout)

The last quarter-final of the competition ended in tears for Zambia, as they fell to a penalty shootout defeat to Guinea. The spot kicks ended 5-4 in favour of the West Africans, following a goalless stalemate during regulation and extra time. Guinea keeper Abdoulaziz Keita saved Daudi Musekwa’s kick before converting his own to send his team through to the semi-finals of the competition where they will face Congo DR.

Tunisia 1-2 Mali

The Malians made their way to the semi-finals of the competition on Sunday thanks to a 2-1 victory over Tunisia. The North Africans were amongst the favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the competition, but the West Africans had other plans, as goals from Aliou Dieng and Abdoulaye Diarra allowed Mali to overcome an early goal from Mohammed Ali Monser. The win sets up a semi-final encounter for Mali against Cote D’Ivoire.

Cameroon 0-3 Cote D’Ivoire

Cote D’Ivoire moved on to the semi-finals of the competition by putting three past Cameroon at the Huye Stadium on Saturday. Goals from Koffi Mahinde, Atcho Djobo and Yao N’Guessan allowed the Elephants to book their ticket and dispose of the Indomitable Lions in their quarter final. Cote d’Ivoire will now face fellow West Africans Mali for a place in the final of the African-based competition.

Rwanda 1-2 Congo DR

CHAN hosts Rwanda fell to a 2-1 defeat to Congo DR after a 1-1 scoreline in 90 minutes led to extra time. The Congolese took the lead on 11 minutes through Doxa Gikanji’s strike, but the Amavubi fans had something to cheer in the second half as Ernest Sugira equalised. The game went into extra time and Congo defender Padou Bompunga was the hero for his team, heading in the winner that would see the hosts eliminated from the tournament.
