CHAN 2016 Group Stage Round-Up: Eight QF Teams Emerge

CHAN 2016 Group Stage Round-Up: Eight QF Teams Emerge

The group stage matches at this year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda have been concluded, and the eight teams that will continue in the tournament are known.

The African-based national teams who have managed to earn their spot in the quarter-finals are Rwanda, Cote D’Ivoire, Cameroon, Congo DR, Tunisia, Guinea, Zambia and Mali.

Below is a round-up of the results:

Uganda 1-1 Zimbabwe

A 1-1 draw between Uganda and Zimbabwe proved to be a frustrating outcome for both countries, as the point apiece was not enough for either of them to progress further in the competition. The first half was goalless, but William Manondo gave Zimbabwe the lead early in the second half. With the three points virtually in the bag, Uganda had a final surprise for their opponents, as Dan Sserunkuma scored in the dying minutes to make it a frustrating draw.

Zambia 0-0 Mali

A goalless stalemate between Zambia and Mali allowed both of the African nations to progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament in Rwanda, as the Zambians topped Group D on seven points, while the West Africans placed second on five points.

Guinea 1-0 Nigeria

The Nigerians required a draw from their final group game against Guinea to earn a place in the quarter-finals, but they could only manage a 1-0 defeat, and were knocked out as a result. The lone goal of the encounter was scored by Ibrahima Sory Sankhon Guinea and Tunisia progressed with five points each, ahead of the Eagles on four.

Niger 0-5 Tunisia

The final game of the group for the Tunisians proved to be their crowning moment, as a stunning 5-0 victory over Niger allowed them to progress in top spot with a superior goal difference. A brace from Saad Bguir, before further goals from Ahmed Akaichi, Ali Maaloul and Hichem Essifi completed the thrashing.

Cameroon 3-1 Congo DR

Cameroon and Congo both managed to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition in Rwanda, with a result that went the way of the Indomitable Lions, 3-1. Yazid Atouba opened the scoring for Cameroon from a Moumi Ngamaleu cross, but Makusu Mundele equalised for the Congolese early in the second half. Ngamaleu was on hand to make it 2-1 with an excellent volley, before Samuel Nlend pushed the encounter beyond Congo DR with a third strike.

Ethiopia 1-2 Angola

Manuel David Afonso was the hero of the day for Angola, as he scored two goals to give his side the 2-1 victory over Ethiopia. The East African national team’s captain Seyoum Tesfaye scored an equaliser, but it would not be enough, and in the end both teams settled for third and fourth spot in their group, stopping them from moving on in the competition.

Cote D’Ivoire 4-1 Gabon

Group A saw Cote D’Ivoire and hosts Rwanda progress to the quarter-finals of the competition, as the Elephants registered a fine 4-1 victory over Gabon. The goals for the Ivorians came from Essis Aka, Franck Guiza, Koffi Mahinde and Nilmar Ble, while Franck Obambou was on target for Gabon’s consolation goal.

Morocco 4-1 Rwanda

CHAN hosts Rwanda knew that they had already qualified to take part in the quarter-finals of the competition after their second match of the campaign, and this gave Morocco the edge, which they took full advantage of. Abdelghani Mouaoui opened the scoring for the North Africans on 15 minutes, before Aziz Mouaoui doubled his team’s lead. Jean Ngomirakiza opened Amavubi’s tally, but a goal from Abdeladim Khadrouf and Mouaoui’s second ensured a 4-1 win for Morocco, but they were still knocked out at the group stage.
