Yaya Toure Disappointed With Losing Out On African Award

Cote D’Ivoire captain Yaya Toure has been vocal about his disappointment and disgust with regards to losing out on the 2015 CAF Footballer of the Year award.

The Manchester City player would have won a record-breaking fifth consecutive African individual nod, had the continent voted in his favour, but instead the winner was Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Borussia Dortmund attacker was crowned at a gala event held in Abuja, Nigeria on Thursday evening, as the 26-year-old beat Andre Ayew and Toure to the accolade.

The annual award is administered by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) through a voting process that includes the coaches or technical directors of the 54 national associations affiliated to CAF.

In the wake of the award going to Aubameyang, Toure has spoken out against CAF and those involved in the voting, believing that he was the more deserving candidate due to the fact that he led the Ivorian national team to 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory.

“I think that’s what makes it the shame of Africa. To behave in this way is indecent. But what can we do?” an angered Toure told Radio France International.

“Africans do not show that Africa is important to us. We give more priority to what’s going on elsewhere than in our own continent. This is what is appalling,” the midfielder said.

“Yaya will look after himself and let Africa look after itself. Like I’m often told, you shouldn’t worry too much about Africa because Africa will be the first to let you down,” a bitter Toure explained.
