How People Are Still Making Money From These Words: ‘Out Of Africa’

From NYTimes. Story by Shivani Vora.

The film “Out of Africa” hit theaters 30 years ago, and just in time for its landmark anniversary, a safari lodge, Angama Mara, has opened in Kenya’s Maasai Mara on the site where the most memorable scenes from the movie were shot.

Situated on the hilltop overlooking the Great Rift Valley where Meryl Streep and Robert Redford filmed their love scenes, the luxury property is comprised of two separate camps, each with 15 tented suites, and is in a prime location to enjoy seeing an abundance of animals including lions, buffaloes and rhinos.

It has a fitness center, a swimming pool, a gallery of African art and jewelry and a studio where Maasai women bead bespoke items. Also, in additional to traditional game drives, guests have the option to take hot air balloon and walking safaris.

Nods to the film are throughout, including colorful screens in guest rooms that hint at the scene in the film where Ms. Streep uses the screen in her home as inspiration to begin her storytelling and a pair of plantation chairs in a communal area that are movie lookalikes.

Prices from $750 per person, per night.
