Real Estate Entrepreneur Is The New Ooni Of Ife, Nigeria’s Traditional Ruler

Energetic, rich, and relatively young, the new ooni of Ife is 41-year-old Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, traditional monarch of the Yoruba people of Southwest Nigeria, News24 reports.

Chosen from 20 candidates, Ogunwusi is one of Nigeria’s youngest traditional rulers, and he’s been coronated king of Nigeria’s second-largest ethnic group. About 40 million people are Yoruba. Nigeria’s No. 1 ethnic group is the Hausa-Fulani.

Ife is an ancient Yoruba city in Southwestern Nigeria, about 218 kilometers northeast of Lagos. All ethnic Yoruba including those as far away as Togo, Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago, can trace their origins to Ife.

Trained as an accountant, Ogunwusi made his multi-million dollar fortune mostly from real estate and marketing. The son of a retired radio and TV broadcaster, he was already a prince of one of the ruling houses in the Ife kingdom.

Ogunwusi is “an astute entrepreneur driven by turning impossibilities to possibilities,” according to the Vanguard newspaper.

As ooni, he’ll be the most powerful and influential traditional monarch among the Yoruba people, according to News24.

Ogunwusi is chairman of Gran Imperio Group, a leading real estate and construction company.

He took over as ooni from Kunade Sijuade, who died in July after 35-years of rule as paramount ruler and spiritual leader.

Traditionally, the ooni or any king in Yorubaland is revered and considered “sovereign, second in rank to the gods,” News24 reports. His decision is considered final.

British colonial rulers reduced the power of the Yoruba kings and other traditional rulers said Abimbola Adesoji, head historian at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, in an AFP interview.

Now, they are mostly constitutional monarchs with no real power, Awolowo said. They’re considered custodians of culture and supreme heads of local communities, and they are paid but not assigned any specific role in the constitution. Their relevance depends on how they use their influence to benefit their subjects.

Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo attended the coronation, along with tens of thousands of well wishers.
