Gabon’s Aubameyang Keen To Be Named Africa’s Best

Gabon attacking talent Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is keen to continue his work towards becoming the Bundesliga’s top scorer in an effort to be named the 2015 African Player of the Year.

The Borussia Dortmund striker has scored 25 goals in all competitions this season, including 17 strikes in 14 Bundesliga appearances, ensuring that his place among the top 10 nominees for the award makes perfect sense.

His scoring stats make a strong case for his chances of breaking the choke-hold that Ivorian Yaya Toure has over the award, having been named the African Player of the Year for the last four consecutive years.

Last year the Gabon star came second to Toure for the award, and this year he is looking to go one step further.

“Of course it’s important for me to be the top scorer, because I want to be Africa’s Footballer of the Year,” he said to the Bundesliga website. “I definitely want to win the award this year and I try to score in every game.”

The 26-year-old striker has been in incredible form this year, with recent times in particular turning out to be a delight for the Dortmund attacker.

He scored two hat-tricks in the space of a few days at the end of October, and has been scoring freely for most of the last year, including a goal at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for his country.

Aubameyang scored twice in a 4-1 win against Stuttgart on Sunday, and is closing in on winning his bet with Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel in terms of scoring 20 goals this season, and the season is only at the half-way mark.

“Three more goals and we can make a new bet,” said Aubameyang with Dortmund facing three more league games against Wolfsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt and Cologne before the winter break,” the striker added.

The victor of the Player of the Year award will be decided by a voting process that will include the coaches or technical directors of the 54 national associations affiliated to CAF, with the announcement taking place at an awards gala will be held on Thursday, 7 January 2016 in Abuja, Nigeria.
