A recent report by Netherland-based Top Employers Institute on the best South African companies to work for showed that companies that take care of their staff well sets them apart from their competitors in all industries including tech, finance and manufacturing.

Top Employers Institute has for the last 25 years conducted a Certification Programme in over 100 countries around the world, and companies that appear in its list are awarded the Top Employers South Africa 2016 certification, which is an indication of exceptional employee conditions within the firm.

We take a look at 10 of the best companies to work for in South Africa.

Unilever Brands

Unilever South Africa

According to the Top Employers report, Unilever South Africa does a good job in taking care of its employees. The company was voted the top employer in the country for two years running, ensuring that people covet the possibility of working for the world’s third largest consumer goods company after Procter and Gamble and Nestle. Unilever has 3,500 staff in the country, and is responsible for hundreds of brands, including the likes of Omo, Sunlight, Axe, Lipton and Knorr, amongst many others.

Old Mutual

Financial services giant Old Mutual was able to secure the top employer spot as the best financial services and insurance provider to work at for the fifth consecutive year, while it is the second best out of all companies. It is also considered a top employer on the African continent in general, doing well in all eight countries that it currently serves, which include Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.

Microsoft was ranked as the top IT company to work for in South Africa, and was also ranked as the third best company overall, which is an impressive stat for the global tech giant. It previously made the list in 2014, taking the fifth position, which means that they have risen two places within the ranking.

Yet another tech company in the list, Accenture appeared on the list last year, and has done well to remain within the top ten as an international company with a local branch in South Africa. With clients in more than 120 countries worldwide, they are amongst the world’s leading professional services companies, providing consulting and outsourcing services through strategy, digital, technology and operations capabilities.

SAP Africa has made this list once again, qualifying in 2014 as one of the top employers in the country and replicating that success this year. Headquartered in Johannesburg, but with branches in Durban and Cape Town, the company is a leader in enterprise application software business. SAP was recently in the news regarding  its ‘Skills for Africa’ job creation initiative where it commitmented to train 10,000 ICT consultants across Africa in the next five years.

The soft drink company has often been praised for working conditions and the way that their staff are treated and appreciated, but their position on the list confirms the good work that Coke is doing in South Africa.

This is a continued effort from the Coca-Cola group in the country, as they have been a notably attractive employer for some time, appearing on many similar lists alongside the top companies in South Africa recognised for their role in investing in their human resources and providing a comfortable workplace for staff.

Vodacom was ranked as the top company to work for in the telecommunications sector, rounding out the top 10 best companies list and receiving a feather in their cap for outdoing competitors such as MTN and Cell C by topping the list in their industry.
