Kenyan Tech Startup BRCK Launches Education Kit

Kenyan technology firm BRCK, known for its offgrid rugged internet generator by the same name, has launched an education ventures that will supply schools with hardware and software solutions that will enable students in marginalized areas access learning material online.

The venture — dubbed BRCK Education —  will be selling a pack of 40 tablets, named the Kio, at $99 each, in a self-powered, cloud enabled wifi hotspot case, called the Kio Kit, at $5,000.

“The tablet can run multimedia content, has the enough battery to manage the intermittent  power in rural areas and ruggedized to reduce breakage,” BRCK noted on its website.

BRCK co-founder, Juliana Rotich said the kit will enable organizations and governments across Africa tackle digital literacy.

“BRCK aims to creatively and effectively deliver 21st century technology that will revolutionize the education sector and eventually take digital literacy in Kenya and in the African continent to the next level,” Rotich told Techmoran in August.

The Kio Kit and the Kio are both solar powered and the tablet can be used for up to eight hours after charging.

The learning material included in the tablets will be created by eLimu, a Kenyan tech startup that  develop soft copies of local schools curriculum.

Kio Kit will be available for Kenyan schools from October and in stores across Africa from January 2016. It can be preordered on the BRCK website.
