SA’s Anderson Through To US Open QF With Murray Win

South African tennis sensation Kevin Anderson pulled off a stunning victory against Scottish player Andy Murray in the fourth round of US Open action on Monday.

The powerful server managed an impressive 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 6-7 victory over the world number three, allowing him to move on to the quarter-finals of the American tournament, which means that the 29-year-old has now reached his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final after reaching the fourth round on numerous occasions.

Anderson almost progressed to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in June this year, after a long battle with world number one Novak Djokovic in which the South African player out of his skin to win two sets, but the Serbian eventually won the encounter and Anderson was forced to wait until next year to reach the quarters at Wimbledon.

This time, however, the script was different, and Murray was on the back-foot from early on, losing a crucial first set 7-6 in a tie breaker, giving Anderson the confidence to win the second set 6-3.

Murray fought back in the third set to ensure that he was not defeated in straight sets, pulling off a tie breaker victory, but in the fourth set the South African’s determination and hard work paid off, as he secured a stunning surprise victory over his British counterpart.

In the first round Anderson managed a win over Russian Andrey Rublev in four sets, before straight set victories over American Austin Krajicek and Austrian Dominic Thiem in the second and third rounds respectively.

After the match, in which Anderson played with class and surprised many onlookers, the South African wrote on Twitter, saying: “Incredible experience tonight at @Usopen, a match I will never forget. Thanks to all the amazing fans! On to quarters.”
