South Africa’s ‘Uber for Cleaning’ Firm Makes It Into US Top Accelerator Program

South African office and homes cleaning services tech firm SweepSouth became the first ever African firm to be accepted in the US-based startup accelerator program that will see it included in a four month training program and receive $125,000 in funding.

The startup, which operates like an “Uber for cleaning” by matching cleaners with offices in major cities of South Africa; Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria, has been received well in the market after it got local angle funding.

The companies which started in 2014 will become the first African startup to join the US 500 Startups accelerator., which operates in over 50 countries and aim to become the largest venture capital firm in the world.

“We are meeting some of the smartest people in the industry who understand and have experience in taking a company like SweepSouth from thousands of transactions a month to hundreds of thousands,” BusinessTech quoted Alen Ribic, SweepSouth chief technology officer, saying.

A number of accelerator programs have sprung up across Africa over the last decade as investors seek to tap into the regions emerging startup culture and a growing middle class market that has seen the region post one of the best growth rate in the world.

South Africa has about 21 startup accelerator programs that help investing companies nature entrepreneurs and startups.

“We hope that the experiences and international backing we have from the 500 Startups team and our local investors will set SweepSouth for a very prosperous future and help us further contribute to our country’s economy,” Sweepsouth co-founder Aisha Pandor said.
