Kenya’s Mall Mania Attracts International Retailers

Kenya is experiencing a mall mania, which explains why two years after a terrorist attack on Westgate mall, shoppers still streamed there after the shopping center was rebuilt from the ashes of the September 2013 Attack.

The East African Nation was ranked Africas second biggest formalized economy, after South Africa and higher than Nigeria, by a survey conducted by New York Stock Exchange-listed research company, Nielsen.

International retailers and brand have noticed this growing appettite fueled by a budding middle class in the country and other nations on the continent and are coming in to set up shop in new shopping centers like the recently opened Garden City Mall.

“The formal sector is growing slowly and once everybody comes in and brings excitement in different ways and different means it will increase the formal capacity, which is good for everybody. Good for employment, good for taxation, good for government… good for everybody,” Nakumatt Holding’s managing director Atul Shah told CCTV Africa.
