Artificial Intelligence Bot That Teaches Languages Wins Seedstars Ethiopia

LangBot, an artificial intelligence language teaching chatbot emerged as the winner of Seedstars Ethiopia, the early-stage startups competition that spans the globe and chooses winners from a selection of impressive tech companies.

LangBot will now represent Ethiopia at the Seedstars World final alongside the winners of local Seedstars events in other African countries, after the gamified chatbot innovation was selected as the best Ethiopian startup at local tech hub Iceaddis on Monday, according to TechMoran.

Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Tunisia and Mozambique have already selected their Seedstars winners, while other countries on the continent still need to hold their final events.

The gamified language teaching messenger chatbot, which is currently in the beta testing stage of its development, uses artificial intelligence to assist individuals to overcome the language barrier that may exist between people, according to Seedstars.

Seven tech startups made the shortlist for the final Ethiopian event, with education, money transers, content and transport among the issues addressed by the chosen startups.

The judging panel that selected LangBot as the winner consisted of Marc Lepage, Africa knowledge and innovation advisor at UNDP Ethiopia, Eleni Gabre-madhin, chief executive at Ethiopia Commodity Exchange, Shem Asefaw, entrepreneur & angel investor at ShemTECH Ventures, Eyob Tolina, director at Schulze Global, and Fanny Dauchez, associate for Africa at Seedstars World, according to ITNewsAfrica.

The six other startups that made the final shortlist included Mak-Addis Tutors, a teaching platform, Meda Messenger, a chat and money transfer app, SemayDocs, a document digitization platform, smsCrush, a text message news notification service, SIREE, an online education tool, and ZayRide, an app that provides on-demand taxi, ambulance and delivery services.

From Seedstars Ethiopia to Seedstars World

Seedstars World, which describes itself as the world’s biggest startup competition in emerging markets, holds these events in over 65 countries before winners are selected to take part in a grand final.

LangBot will now join other Seedstars country-winners at the final event in Switzerland during April next year, where it will deliver a pitch that could potentially earn the company up to $1 million in equity investments and prizes, according to Seedstars.
